We need to be measured, thoughtful, cautious but principled. We have to be brutally honest to ourselves in understanding our strength and weaknesses.  We should be very careful since the last cockroaches are crawling out from underground with their last attempt to disintegrate our country. We need to work to bridge old divides, find common ground where possible, forge collective solutions that would help us to confront our challenges. Attract others to our cause and tackle issues that matter most to Ethiopians as a whole.  Focus on our economy, security and stability. Emotional agitation focused of sectarian issues will not take us anywhere.  

Government is imperfect but indispensable for our safety and stability. Avoid anarchy by blocking those who want the shortest path postulate to power or make a comeback to reestablish one sided wealth accumulation and narrowly based prosperity only for the ruling group.  We need an experienced hand to handle our complex situation. External actors always get it wrong and their prescription is always off target with the exception of the arrogance of we know it all. Vulgar attempt in regime change created havoc in developing countries they had their hands on.  We do not need a plain headed politician to come and tell us what to do just because he comes through the revolving door of EU chairmanship. We respect experienced and knowledgeable hand but not an ammeter who happens to be experienced in his country politics far from Africa, small and less complicated.  We carefully Look at Libya, Syria, Iraq, Egypt etc.. We have to show once more that Ethiopia and Ethiopians are relentless in defense of our country and people steadily to advance our collective interests committed to equality with diversity. It is a complex world that requires sophistication, cold blooded calculations without emotion or ethnic arithmetic, and with give and take. We also need to get a domestic solution to our internal conflict avoiding the moto of the enemy of my enemy is my friend. By now we should learn more than enough from the internal and external alliance system that costed our beloved country dearly.  We need to stop our thugs and Ethnic warriors who behave, dress and act like Rambo with empty-headed trigger-happy hate shedding the blood of innocent people.

We are living in an interdependent world linking the challenges we face to the reality in the outside world and so we have to avoid being narrowly focused. From our markets to our security, from our public health to our climate, from our effort to alleviate poverty to building up manufacturing base, etc.. we must act with the understanding that, now more than ever, we have a stake in what happens inside and outside our country. We should avoid shooting first and asking questions later. Those who shoot from the hip with aggressive behavior need to be collectively confronted.

Our challenges and struggle is not going to be short and pretty. So we need to be prepared steadily and progressively. We should not be confused by paid lobbyists and social media misinformation warriors. Beware of and identify outrageously deceitful politicians. Avoid tragedy and setbacks by not being emotional and agitated. Understand the multiple and complex initiatives to disintegrate and fracture our nation. We have to face it with the right temperament and morality. The interlinked political, security, and humanitarian crisis need a careful and coordinated approach and fending off those who want to complicate it or take advantage. We need a mature and more sophisticated diplomacy and concerted effort.

Leadership is more like conducting a symphony than performing as a virtuoso player of any single instrument- often with multiple, potentially dissonant musicians and the need to achieve harmony among them.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sees the demonstrations against Amahra genocide as strategies to usurp power

Demonstrations in Amahra regional state continued on Friday for the fifth day. According to a report by the regional state media, Amahra media corporations, people took to the streets in huge numbers in Dangela, Debre Tabor, Dejen, Bure and Addis Kidam. 

In the past four days, there had been demonstrations in several other major towns and cities in the region. 

Protestors demanded the government to end the massacre and displacement of ethnic Amahra in different parts of Ethiopia. 

For over three years now, thousands of ethnic Amhara were slaughtered in the Oromo and Benishangul Gumuz region of Ethiopia. B

But the massacres that alarmed the people in the Amhara regions to the point of organizing massive and power protests were the ones that took place in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. 

Many areas in North Shoa and South Wollo region came under Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) militant wing attack  for days. The city of Ataye was entirely destroyed. Hundreds of innocent civilians including children and women were killed and over 250,000 people were displaced from several towns. 

Regional authorities have been sending mixed messages about the demonstrations that rather seem to be very persistent. On the one hand, they say they have respect for the demonstrations, and they have confirmed that they were peaceful in nature in most cases. 

On the other hand, they accuse the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) with the pretext of some messages echoed during the demonstration.  The Amhara region branch of Prosperity Party claims that these messages could worsen attacks against Amahra outside the region. 

On Thursday, there was a clash between protestors and security forces of the region in Bahir Dar. Security forces had to fire tear gas to stop what was said to be intentions for vandalism from protestors. Protestors attempted to attack security forces with rocks too – something that did not resonate well among a considerable number of Ethiopians. 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed remarked about the demonstrations when he was meeting with heads of regional states and city administration over the election. For Abiy Ahmed, the massive demonstrations in the Amhara region following the latest massacre of hundreds of Amharas (this time in the Amhara region of Ethiopia) are just strategies of usurping power by force. “We know the games. We played them. They did not surprise us,” he said.

In the parts of Ethiopia where there was latest massacre of Amhara , new deadlines are not yet introduced

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia on Friday announced that it has extended the deadline for voter registration. 

The decision came a day after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had a meeting with authorities of the Board and heads of regional states and city administrations. 

According to the schedule that the Board announced before, voter registration was supposed to be completed on April 23. However, Voter registration turnout was low and there were also places where it did not happen at all due to security problems, as disclosed by the Election Board. 

There were also logistical problems, as disclosed by the Election Board Chairwomen, Bertukan Mideksa, during a meeting with PM Abiy Ahmed on Thursday. 

In a statement released on Friday, the Board said there have been improvements in the number of voter registration compared  to last week including in areas where it started late as in the case of Afar and Somali regions of Ethiopia. 

According to the Board, as of April 23, 2021 18, 427,239 people have been registered across 41,659 polling stations across the country. 

The new deadlines are not all the same. Some places have longer deadlines than others. In Somali and Afar regions, where voter registration started late due to security and other issues, it is extended up to May 14, 2021. 

In areas where it was paused after it was started due to a combination of factors including security, the new deadline is May 7, 2021. 

The Board also said that there are areas where voter registration is not started at all – in the four zones of Wollega. And the Board said that it is working to start registration. It means that the deadlines for registration in those areas will be longer. 

The situation in Benishangul Gumuz is similar. The process was impeded, like Wollega region of Ethiopia, on similar grounds. 

In areas in North Shoa and South Wollo (both in Amhara regions), where there had been a massacre of Amhara for several days, the registration was halted. More than 250,000 people were displaced from several cities.  

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia did not give new deadlines for those regions. And it said that it will announce deadlines and   the circumstances under which voter registration will start in those regions

Addis Abeba, April 24/2021 – The joint intelligence and security task force comprised of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), the Federal Police Commission, and Information Network Security Agency (INSA) warned that it would no longer tolerate “forces inside and outside the country” who are working to create “national chaos”, “public rage” and are “threatening the country’s existence.”

In a statement the task force released last night, it said that there are “verified” and “ample evidences” that forces inside and outside the country have joined hands to create chaos and distabilize the country while the government is working to solve problems related with identity and boundaries issues “scientifically and impartially.”

The
task force further said that at a time when the government was
determined to hold a free and fair election, and is preparing to
conduct the second filling of the GERD, these forces and armed groups
were creating chaos in multiple places and said that lives were lost
and properties were damaged the violence in North Showa and Oromo
zone as well as in central Gonder zone of Amhara regional state; the
violence in Benishangul Gumuz; Afar and Somali regional states
bordering areas as well as the large scale violence in western Oromia
regional state.

“In
its effort to enforce the rule of law, the government is taking
measures against the radical TPLF and OLF/Shene groups as well as
other armed groups,” the statement said.

In measures being taken in Oromia regional state, “the OLF/Shene armed group” which is sustaining heavy loss, is “moving around various places an inflicting attacks against civilians in order to distract the government’s attention. Measures are reinforced to the full extent in order to stop this group completely.”

The task force said that the public should understand that these forces both from within and outside the country are “conspiring to dismantle the country” and are working relentlessly by using “social media influencers inside and outside the country” as well as using those “who are hijacked by this evil deed and are embedded inside the government’s structure” to kill and displace innocent civilians and are causing “public rage” in order to threaten the “existence of the country and the peace and security of its people.”

The task force called on the people of Ethiopia to cooperate with security forces by providing information and assisting it in order to make the “large scale law enforcement efforts” currently underway successful. AS

Addis Abeba, April 24/2021 – The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has postponed voters’ registration by two and three weeks in various parts of the country.

In a statement NEBE released yesterday, which was the original deadline for voters’ registration, it said registrations were ongoing in various parts of the country and were at various stages: for example the registration in Afar and Somali regional states commenced late while in other parts of the country commenced on time. In general, so far 18,427,239 voters were registered in 41,659 voter registration stations functioning across the country.

However, due to challenges owing to delays in registration start dates; delays of registration due to lack of sufficient information and other reasons; as well as interruptions in some registration offices, especially in the capital Addis Abeba due to the number limit that voters are allowed to register in one station, which is 1, 500, among others, the Board has decided to extend the date.

In addition, the Board said that voters’ registrations did not start in all the four zones of Wellega in western Oromia, namely: West and East Wellega, Horo Guduru and Kellem Wellega zones due to problems associated with security. The Board said it was making preparations, including distribution of election material and training of election officials in order to commence voters registration in seven weredas across west and east Wellega, and Horo Guduru zones. The Board didn’t mention if similar preparations were underway in Kellem Wellega.

Similar preparation were underway in Beinshangul Gumuz regional state except for Kamashi zone, Sedal Wereda, an area which is reported to have fallen under the control of rebels this week. In North Shewa and Oromo zone in Amhara regional state, where recent violence flared up, electoral works have stopped; the Board said it would announce when voters’ registration would begin. The NEBE further said that it would facilitate the opening of sub-registration offices in voters’ registration stations which have finished the 1,500 people registration limit. AS

በመድረኩ ላይ ንግግር ያደረጉት የሰላም ሚኒስትር ዲኤታ ዶክተር ስዩም መስፍን ኢትዮጵያ የፌዴራል ስርዓት መከተል ከጀመረች ሶስት አስርት አመታት ብታስቆጥርም በትግበራ እና አፈፃፀም ከፍተኛ ክፍተት መኖሩን አንስተዋል።

በኢትዮጵያ የዴሞክራሲ ስርአት እየተገነባ እንዳይሄድ እና በህገ- መንግስቱ የተደነገጉ መብቶች በአግባቡ ተፈፃሚ እንዳይሆኑ እንቅፋት ሆኖ መቆየቱን አስታውሰዋል።

በዚህም ከህዝቡ የሚነሱ አዳዲስና ወቅታዊ ጥያቄዎችን በተገቢ መንገድ ለመመለስ የሚያስችል ብቃት እንዳይኖር አድርጓል ነው ያሉት።

በርካታው ህዝብም በፌዴራሊዝም ላይ ያለው ግንዛቤ ዝቅተኛ እንዲሆን ከማድረግ ባሻገር በስርዓቱ ላይ ጥርጣሬ እንዲያድርባቸው ማድረጉንም ዶክተር ስዩም ገልፀዋል።

የሰላም ሚኒስቴር በእነዚህ በተንከባለሉ ችግሮች ምክንያት ከህዝብ የሚነሱ ጥያቄዎችን በአግባቡ ለመፍታትና ብዥታዎችን ለማጥራት እየሰራ መሆኑን ጠቅሰው፤ የዛሬው የውይይት መድረክም የዚሁ አንድ አካል መሆኑን ተናግረዋል።

በመድረኩ የተለያዩ ባለድርሻ አካላት የተሳተፉበት በጥናት ላይ የተመሰረተ ፅሁፍ ቀርቦ ውይይት እንደሚደረግበት የኢዜአ ዘገባ ያመላክታል።

ሚኒስቴሩ መድረኮችን በአውደ ጥናት፣ ስብሰባ፣ የፓናል ውይይትና ፎረሞችን በማዘጋጅት ተከታታይ ስራዎችን በማከናወን ላይ ይገኛል።

በመድረኩ በርካታ ምሁራን የተሳተፉበት ሲሆን “ፌዴራሊዝምና የሰላም ግንባታ በኢትዮጵያ” በሚል መሪ ሃሳብ ለሁለት ቀናት ይካሄዳል።
