
Veteran Ethiopian historian and Geez language scholar, Professor Getachew Haile is the winner of this year’s Bikila Award. He will be awarded on Saturday September 22, 2018 at Chestnut Conference Centre, 89 Chestnut Street, Toronto.
The award poster describes Professor Getachew as such:
“Professor Getatchew Haile is world-renowned scholar, an Ethiopian-American philologist widely considered the foremost scholar of the Ge’ez language alive today. He was acknowledged for his contributions to the field with a MacArthur Fellows Program “Genius” Award and the Edward Ullendorff Medal from the Council of the British Academy for scholarly distinction and achievements. Professor Getatchew Haile has published several catalogs of Ethiopic manuscripts, on microfilm, books and many articles on Ethiopian studies.”
In the other categories, Dr. Catherine Hamlin of the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Hospital, Bethlehem Tilahun of soleRebels, Benyam Belete of Mekedonia: Home for the Elderly & Mentally Disabled are among some of the awardees this year.
The keynote speaker is Professor Mammo Muchie and Jeff Pearce is the honorary guest speaker.
Bikila Award was created in honour of one of the greatest long-distance runner – Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia. This award is now going to be the fifth Bikila Award.
The organizers said that the evening would also include cocktails, delicious food, live Jazz music by The Barnes/Woldemichael Ethio-Jazz Quartet, door prizes and other entertainment.
