ADMAS, condemns in the strongest possible terms the arrest and torture of Amhara politicians, journalists and activists that occurred this past weekend in Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar.

On March 25, 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, members of the Ethiopian security forces re- arrested over a dozen prominent leaders at a private residence while the leaders were celebrating their own release and recent release of many other political prisoners and activists. These leaders are being held in prison for simply displaying the True Ethiopian flag at a private party.

Ethiopian security forces entered the private residence, arrested these leaders, and are now being currently held at Gotera-Pepsi Police Station in Addis Ababa.

This past Saturday, March 24, 2018 in Bahir Dar city, 19 brave Amhara leaders were arrested, severely beaten, and taken to custody simply for attempting to establish an Amhara political party with permission from the National Election Board. These promising young Amhara leaders were arrested while having dinner after completion of a successful General Assembly of the leadership.

Unfortunately, the arrest of the prominent leaders in Addis Ababa and courageous Amhara leaders in Bahir Dar is in line with the policy of the ruling party of Ethiopia, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of targeting Amharas who dare to challenge the system of oppression. The TPLF led government views Amharas as an enemy whose identity, culture, and history must be eradicated.

ADMAS calls on the TPLF led regime to release these leaders including the thousands of Amharas languishing in prisons across the country.

ADMAS calls on the TPLF led regime to end the State of Emergency that is being used as a pretext to suppress the basic rights of Amharas and all Ethiopians.

ADMAS calls on all human rights organization, United Nations, and the U.S. Government to condemn the arrest and torture of Amhara leaders and insist on their release.

ADMAS calls on all Amharas to support these brave leaders and their families during this difficult and uncertain time in Ethiopia’s history.

ADMAS will take all necessary measures to ensure the wellbeing of our leaders and that they are safely reunited with their families and communities.
