Bill Stanley, a U.S. Field Museum scientist, died of a heart attack while doing research in Ethiopia

The director of collections at Chicago’s Field Museum has died while doing research in Ethiopia.

The museum on Tuesday announced that 58-year-old Bill Stanley died after suffering a heart attack while checking trap lines during fieldwork on small African mammals. The exact date of his death wasn’t given.

According to the museum, Stanley’s work has described numerous species, with two, a mouse and a frog, being named after him.

Stanley was one of the museum’s top scientific spokesmen. Officials say Stanley, who joined the museum’s staff in 1989, traveled to Africa at least once a year.

In its announcement, the museum said Stanley “loved sharing what he knew and did it in the friendliest, most engaging way possible.”.
